Tokyo Station is the front door to Japan’s capital Tokyo!

The new Tokyo Station was opened in a redesigned form on October 1, 2012.

Tokyo Station was built in 1914.
The station building was designed by Tatsuno Kingo, who was one of Japan’s leading architects at the time.
The building that consisted of a brown decorated bricks intersected by white granite strips and topped by a Victorian style dome was very popular among visitors.

Unfortunately, the building was destroyed in the massive air raid on Tokyo during WW2.
While the building was quickly rebuilt following the war, it was never fully restored to its original form due to budget limitations.
In the end, it was reconstructed as a two-story building with octagonal roofs in 1947.

Then, with the launch of a redevelopment plan for the area surrounding Tokyo Station in 2007, the station building began to be restored.
With the restoration, Tokyo Station has become one of Tokyo’s leading sightseeing spots in addition to being a train station.

The station building, with a total length of approximately 335 meters, a width of approximately 20 meters, and a height of approximately 45 meters when including the domes, features both a regal and imposing sense of presence along with an elegant design.
It overflows with a retro atmosphere, but also has a modern sense about it.

In addition to the attractive red bricks of the exterior, the interior is also very interesting.
The dome roofs at the Marunouchi north and south exits have an appearance that is similar to a kaleidoscope.
The soft cream color of the roof is intersected with brown lines, and the vertices of the octagonal ceiling are decorated with Oriental zodiac reliefs.

Even when the Tokyo Station building is busy with train passengers getting on and off, there are always people there taking pictures with their cameras.
