天気 (Tenki) Fun! Japan Words vol.73

tenki_words_TOP

The Japanese word 天気 (tenki) means weather. How do you talk about the weather in Japanese? Fun!Japan will teach you tons of Japanese words you can use in conversation. Whether you’re traveling in Japan or talking with Japanese speakers. For talking about the weather, here some useful phrases are:

A:天気はどうですか? (How’s the weather?)
Tenki wa dō desuka?
B: 外はどうですか?
Soto wa dō desuka? (What’s it like outside?)

There are a lot of possible answers to that question. Here are the most common ones.

A: 暖かいです。(It’s warm)
Atatakai desu
B:寒いです。(It's cold)
Samui desu

Although the word "weather" means just weather in English, but in Japanese “tenki” also can be used on another way. For example:

いい天気ですね。(It's a beautiful day, isn't it?)
Ii tenki desu-ne.

Here, "Ii tenki desu-ne." is used if it's really a nice day and the speaker may want to talk a little bit about the actual weather, as often as he or she uses it as a pure greeting to jump right into a totally different topic. Talking about the weather 天気 (tenki) is an easy way to break the ice and start a conversation. Asking “ii tenki desu ne?” can instead just as a casual greeting much as in the English when someone says how are you. It could go:

Persons A and B happen to meet each other on the street in the neighborhood.
Person A: Ii tenki desu ne.
Person B: Indeed, it is.
Person A: Are you going somewhere?
Person B: Yes, I am on the way to the city hall.

I always thought that’s a funny opener, but most of the time I hear it, people just open up a conversation with it and quickly jump into the actual conversation.
