Nanji (何時?) Fun! Japan Words vol.69

If there’s one thing you need to keep track of while you are travelling, it is time. (Money comes next, but I’m sure that’s a given)

Punctuality of the Japanese is well documented. Public trasportation is spot-on and they would let you know as soon as they find out it is running late, even a minute.

May it be transportation, movie, or your check-out time, you would not want to miss these if you want to enjoy your stay.

When asking for the time, you could either ask “Itsu?” which means “When?”, or “Nanji?” which means “What time?”

“Itsu” could be used in various cases and covers a very general time frame, whereas “Nanji” implies that you are trying to figure out the closest oppotunity to do something.

“Check-out wa nanji desuka?” = “What time is the check-out?”

Another term you’d like to keep in mind “tsugi”, which means “next”, and “saigo” which means last.

Here are some useful phrases:
“Tsugi wa nanji desuka?” = “When is the next one?”
“Tsugi no bus wa nanji desuka?” = “What time is the next bus?”

“Saigo wa nanji desuka?” = “When is the last one?”
“Saigo no densha wa nanji desuka?” = “When is the last train?”

You could also simply use it to ask for the time.
“Ima nanji desuka?” = “What time is it now?”

Make sure that you don’t miss your train or favorite attractions!
