This week’s Fun Japan Word is often a synonym of summer and holidays, it’s “umi” (海) or “sea” in Japanese!
Since Japan is an archipelago surrounded by ocean, “umi” (海) is a very important word for Japanese people.
There are many words with “umi” (海) like:
海辺 - Umibe : Seashore
And this funny one : 海猫- Umineko, literally the “sea cat” which means in reality “seagull”.
There’s even a national holiday to celebrate the sea which is called: Umi no hi (海の日), the day of the sea.
This national holiday takes place every year on the third monday of July.
You can find many sea-related events or festivals on this day, even if you don’t even live close to the sea!
