Japan is said/recognized worldwide as one of the cleanest country in the world.
Based on my experience living here, I can really feel the effort that the whole community pays to keep their living environment clean and cosy.
For travellers, we might simply assume that the reason of why Japan is so clean is because there are many trash cans allocated everywhere to ensure that people can throw their waste easily.
However, you will be surprised to find there are extremely little garbage cans provided in Tokyo.
Especially in crowded places like Shinjuku and Shibuya, to prevent terrorist actions I presume, finding a garbage bin as difficult as treasure hunting.
That’s why I want to share a tip about garbage throwing in Japan!
There is a place where garbage bins definitely exist. Can you guess where ?
The answer is - Convenience Stores!
There are always garbage bins in front or inside a convenience store.
These are garbage bins allocated inside a Seven-Eleven around the Aoyama district.
So, next time if you have some waste and wondering where can you throw it, just find the nearest convenience store around you!
Also, for your information , the garbage throwing system is relatively stricter than other countries.
Unlike South East Asian countries, where we can just throw everything in one bin, in Japan , everyone is required separate the garbage and throw them according to its material.
Notice there are 3 different bins in a row on the picture above ?
This is how in general people sort out the garbages. The basic way of sorting the garbage is to see whether it belong to empty cans and bottles category, PET bottle category, or burnable waste category..
So, before you throw away stuff, please make sure you are throwing the correct rubbish in the correct place to avoid creating inconvenience to the cleaning authorities!
Throw combustible garbage such as kitchen scraps, rubber and leather products, tree branches and twigs, paper trashes, paper diapers to this bin.
Throw only PET bottles to this bin. Some places require you to separate the cap and the body to ease the recycling process for these items.
Bin for can and glass made bottles! I am sure you know what to throw here!
Littering might be a little troublesome in Japan, but this action shows how the concern the Japanese people are in protecting the environment. All of us living on earth have been taking a very great advantage of the natural resources to achieve economical development ,therefore it is also our responsibility to participate in keeping the environment clean and recycle usable resources.
Let’s learn the keep clean and recycle spirit from the Japanese people and make best use of it in our own country as well for our better living!
