Here’s another useful phrase that doesn’t have a true English equivalent: otsukaresama!
If I were to explain what this phrase means, it would go like this:
“Otsukaresama is like saying “thank you for your hard work, you must be tired!”… but it can also be used as a greeting. If you run into a colleague at 9am, you might say “otsukaresama desu” (“desu” adds a level of politeness) – even though you know that they’re not actually tired because their day just started. Oh! And if you are in the office, you can use the phrase for people at all levels, whether above or below you.”
All of that is one simple phrase: otsukaresama.
