Dear friends, here is an idea for you as if you ever visit Hiroshima and Miyajima: Carry a bento across to Miyajima and enjoy the blessings of the Inland Sea!

I planned to stay the night on Miyajima Island, to see the shrine’s torii gate lit up in the evening.
My conundrum was where to eat dinner on this island.
Surely, there would only be few establishments open at night, let alone fewer that served the food I wanted.
Upon arriving at Miyajima-guchi, the ferry terminal on the mainland from which ships bound for Miyajima leave, I discovered a restaurantうえの(Ueno).
There was seating too, but eager to set foot on the island early, I stepped up to the small counter for bento requests.

I told them my name and my requested quantity, and was told to wait 15-20 minutes in the neighbouring room.
The minutes seemed to pass fairly slowly in the old, wooden-themed room, but this preparation time gave me confidence that something good was coming my way.
This wasn’t the type of “pre-make in large quantities and serve later” type place; this was a place where food was prepared after the orders come in.
So, I whiffed through pamphlets and made rough plans for the night.

The neatly packed bento was handed over to me and I headed for the ferry terminal.
When reaching my hotel room on Miyajima Island, I opened the box to be delighted.
The fresh smells of anago, or sea eels, permeated the air, nudging my stomach and body to tuck into the meal before me.
The balance of the bento is perfect; there is just the right amount of fish-to-rice, and the pickles are fresh and don’t take over the show.
