Welcome to Garut City, my hometown in West Java, Indonesia. Here, you can try one of famous Japanese noodle, ramen, with an unique experience. Please enter, Ramen Gorilla! No, you won’t meet with the real gorilla here, you just found the name of the restaurant has a same name with gorilla. Yes, Ramen Gorilla. This ramen restaurant located in Garut City, which is only 3 hours from Bandung and 4-5 hours from Jakarta by bus.
This is my first time too at Ramen Gorilla. The restaurant located beside highway and not too hard to spot it because Ramen Gorilla is a big restaurant with a big billboard outside. I and my friend greeted by cozy and fun entrance. You can feel warm and nice Japanese atmosphere although you still at outside of the restaurant. Beside that, you not only can order menu and eat it inside, you can choose table outside.
If I have a chance that time, I want choose table outside but it’s full. So, we must choose table inside. Everyone look so enjoy with their ramen, I could smelled it too :D. I was so curious that time. I’ve checked to the left, to the right, in front of me, there was no gorilla statue or gorilla doll. So, where is I can find something related to gorilla there?
When I opened the menu book, I found it! The name of Gorilla here related to level of spiciness ramen broth, spicy ramen with different level is specialty from this restaurant. The unique thing is, every level spiciness from level 1 to 5 have name. You can spot picture of little gorilla head that show amount of level.
You can choose ramen with 3 different broth like miso broth, shoyu broth, and kare broth. Also, you can choose the level, start from super original, original, and 5 level of spiciness. Every level has unique name, the name is like gorilla will do some action to you haha :D
5 level of spiciness that you can choose:
- Level 1, Diliatin Gorilla means Viewed by Gorilla.
- Level 2, Disamperin Gorilla means Approached by Gorilla.
- Level 3, Ditarik Gorilla means Pulled by Gorilla.
- Level 4, Dipukul Gorilla means Beaten by Gorilla.
- Level 5, Digigit Gorilla means Bitten by Gorilla.
Sounds scary if Gorilla really comes near you and do something to you >.<. But, I think I agree with name of every level, it’s show how spicy you will get. I and my friend chose ramen packet including chicken katsu and chiki tofu. We ordered the same level of spiciness, Level 1 viewed by Gorilla with different broth. I chose miso broth and my friend chose kare broth.
Do not think that level 1 here is easy level of spiciness. Although it’s only feel like viewed by gorilla, but the spiciness success made me said “Haaaah”. Usually, I could handle level 1 to level 3 of spiciness, but here, in this Ramen Gorilla, level 1 was so hot as level 3. So, can you imagine how spicy level 2 to level 5? If you have a chance to visit Garut, challenge yourself with 5 level of spiciness ramen broth at Ramen Gorilla.
Time to review ramen noodle and it’s topping. I wasn’t surprise when the ramen bowl is not big as ramen bowl in Japan, but this portion is enough for lunch. The noodle has a a soft texture but still chewy and fresh. One bowl of ramen including 3 different toppings like a half of boiled egg, two pieces of sausage, and one topping that I didn’t know the name of it (sorry >.<). Beside that, the broth was tasteful and I could taste miso on it although the spiciness was so strong.
The two side dish were so great too. I chose chiki tofu which has round shaped. It’s tasted like “pempek” or “otak-otak” and really yummy when you eat it with three different sauce beside it, there was chilli sauce, tomato sauce, and mayonaise. My friend chose chicken katsu with crunchy texture but soft inside.
Most of the Indonesian people love spicy food, and ramen is one of popular Japanese food which easy to find in Indonesia. So, the combination of ramen and spicy taste is a great thing here and so many customer always come and come again to this restaurant. If you love ramen and do love spicy taste, just visit Ramen Gorilla and choose your favourite level of spiciness there. Who is ready for “Bitten by Gorilla” level?
