[Fun! Japan Reporter] Looks Simple but Tastes Great

Reported by Tata-chan

Can you guess what are there inside the wooden bucket? Are they kind of noodles?
Yes, it is Japanese typical noodles named udon. Different with common noodles we are familiar within Indonesia, udon is thicker and therefore looks bigger. The texture is smooth and a little bit chewy.
You can find udon shown by the pictures at Marugame Udon. It is Kamaage Udon, family size. It might look plain, put in a simple ‘bowl’, but wait until you try it.
Many Japanese food lovers in Indonesia have probably visited Marugame Udon. It has opened 9 outlets in Indonesia; mostly at Jakarta, then Tangerang, Cibubur, and Surabaya. The restaurants have special appearance. We can see the kitchen and all the cooks preparing the food. Visitors have to line up to order, then the cooks prepare the food in a short time, and finally visitors pay at the cashier at the exit. One unique thing at Marugame Udon, visitors may not sit or tag any table before they order and pay the food. By this, visitors who already get their food will easily get some table to eat right away.

People line up before ordering food.

Their menu is basically udon and rice. The have 9 menus for udon and 4 menus for rice. Besides the main dish, they also have various kinds of fried food as side dishes, such as ebi tempura, broccoli tempura, kakiage, inari, and sweet potato. You can choose the side dishes by yourself on your way from the order point to cashier.

Ebi tempura, sweet potato, and beef croquette.

Only Kamaage udon is served in family size. The other udon - already completed with meat / topping you choose – is served in regular bowl as personal portion. When you order Kamaage udon family size, you will also be given 4 or 5 small bowl with hot seasoned ‘soup’. You can add the soup with ginger, sesame seeds, and leeks. To enjoy this Kamaage Udon, take some portion of the udon and put it into your soup bowl.
What I like most about this restaurant is that we can take the seasonings by ourselves. The restaurant provides soy sauce, tempura sauce, and chili powder on each table, but they also provide sesame seeds, leeks, chopped fresh chili, and flour crumbs on a table in the middle of the restaurant. Since I like spicy food, I am always excited finding myself take extra fresh chili to make my udon the best suitable to my tongue! ^_^ One more thing, hot and cold ocha is available for free flow.
