Talking about summer in Japan, there are many things that come to our minds, right?
Watermelon, beach, *and bikinis*, yukata, matsuri, and so many others.
Not many of you might know the word ‘heat stroke’ 熱中症 (necchuushou) since you may live in a tropical area. Hot weather is our friend, right?
Okay, the heatstroke itself is a kind of illness that usually occurs during summer. People who don’t consume enough water may collapse, just like that. It is dangerous. For elderly, this heat stroke might kill them.
I saw it many times on the news, hundreds of people collapse because of it.
What should we do to countermeasure this?
Drink enough water, and cool yourself. Wearing a hat or using an umbrella so that the sunrays won’t hit your heads directly, turning on the air cooler when you are inside a room is some effective ways to do so.
How about the ice?
Ah yes, kakigoori (Japanese shaved ice) is an indispensable item in summer!
It’s also good to countermeasure the heat stroke.
So I went to an interesting event called Kakigoori Collection 2015.
Looks like cars, jewellery, fashion brands are not the only things that can do “collection” themes. Shaved ice collection is also an event in Japan.
You might be familiar with this banner as well.
In this event there were 5 different Kakigoori specialists that participated:
1. 雪うさぎ (Yuki usagi) from Setagaya-ku, Tokyo
2. Patisserie Merci from Utsunomiya-shi, Tochigi Pref.
3. あずきや安堂 (Azukiya andou) from Chofu-shi, Tokyo
4. たい焼きなみへい (Taiyaki namihei) from Kamakura-shi, Kanagawa Pref.
5. Sebastian from Shibuya-ku, Tokyo
Get inside and the staff will hand you a small menu of the collection: green tea, strawberry, condensed milk, chocolate, lemon, melon, etc.
The ones marked with red labels mean that they’re sold-out.
The pricing is reasonable, since the size of the shaved ice is a big portion. You can share it with your family, friends, or boyfriend/ girlfriend.
Proceed to the automated ticket selling machine and insert your money. Then press the shaved ice you desire.
They were categorized by the shops, so don’t you worry, it wasn’t that hard to find the one you want to purchase.
Next on, line up with the other people in front of the shop that sells your kakigoori.
Hand the ticket over to the staff inside the stall first and then line up in the queue.
Look at the size of the kakigoori. Awesome.
Here’s my order! 生いちごかき氷 (Nama ichigo kakigoori) / Fresh strawberry flavoured shaved ice.
Yep, as you can see there are some tiny black dots inside my kakigoori, they’re strawberry seeds.
It tasted like eating the shaved ice with fresh strawberry jam. Delicious!
Have you eaten any kakigoori this summer?
