Mikan daifuku, a daifuku with a whole tangerine inside?!

Daifuku is one of the most common Japanese sweets.

It’s usually made of mochi rice cake filled with red bean pastes.

You can find many common variations like strawberry daifuku, chestnut daifuku or black beans daifuku.

Osaka-based old Japanese sweet maker, Inabaharihichi has a shop in Tokyo, and a small stall located in Keio department store in Shinjuku is selling an unusual version of this classic snack: mikan daifuku, a daifuku with a whole tangerine inside!

Like a daifuku, there’s a soft and chewy mochi skin, then some white bean paste and a big tangerine.

The tangerine is very juicy and creates a delicious and fresh contrast with the sweetness of the white bean paste.

Be careful when you’re eating it, the fruit is so juicy that it spills easily.

Mikan, tangerine in Japanese, is synonymous to winter in Japan, that’s why this sweet is sold around December and January.

Everyone likes to eat them during winter, especially because the right amount of vitamin C is good against cold.
