If you go to Japan, you’ll find a cake called Baumkuchen in every conbini, supermarket or department store.
This cake which can be found in Germany and other European countries is extremely popular in Japan.
It has been introduced around 100 years ago by a German confectioner called Juchheim.
Last time I received some high quality Baumkuchen from the brand Nenrinya as a gift.

Basically, Baumkuchen is a cake made of a mix of flour, butter, eggs and sugar, cooked around a spit in very thin layers.
The result looks like tree rings when cut in slice.
Here is the assortment i received : Plain baumkuchen (vanilla taste) and special autumn edition flavored with Japanese chestnut.
As the outside is slightly crispy, the inside was soft with a nice buttery flavor, perfect match with a cup of coffee or tea.
Both were absolutely delicious and the chestnut flavor tasted really wonderful.
You can find cheap small baumkuchen slices in convini or supermarkets, but the taste of fresh made baumkuchen from cake maker is totally different and ten times better.
Nenrinya has various shop in Japan even in train station like Tokyo Station.
They have Japanese flavor like green tea as well, if you want to try something unusual.
