While I often come to realize the high quality of Japanese products when I have the opportunity to go overseas, one of the most popular of such products among people I know is plastic food wrap.
When I had dinner with a friend who was making a temporary visit to Japan from an overseas work assignment, she told me “I am really glad that I bought large quantities of plastic food wrap and took it with me.”
Somewhat surprised, I replied “Is the plastic wrap that we normally use really that good?
She immediately replied “Japanese plastic wrap is the best!”
While it is difficult to make generalizations, in many cases plastic wrap from overseas becomes ripped easier than Japanese plastic wrap, it has less suction to food and tableware, and it doesn’t easily cut because the teeth for cutting the plastic wrap is weaker.
However, rather than saying that the quality of plastic wrap from overseas is poor, perhaps it would be more suitable to say that Japan has some of the best plastic wrap in the world.
Japanese plastic wrap cuts well, it is easy to cut off exactly where you want to, and because it is very heat resistant and adhesive, it sticks well so that flavors and smells don’t escape.
It seems that many Japanese people who live overseas come to realize how high the quality is of Japanese plastic wrap that they had used before like it was nothing special.
This easy-to-use and convenient plastic food wrap may actually be considered as a high-tech product created through not only high technological capabilities, but also thanks to the careful technological consideration and repeated improvements that Japanese people excel in.
