As a foreigner, when I saw canned bread in Japan for the first time, I was so surprised.
How can you have the idea of selling hot and crispy bread from the bakery in cans?
Then I discovered than Japanese love very soft and chewy bread and steamed bread (mushi-pan) is very popular.
As steamed bread is very soft with no crust and a lot of humidity, it can be canned.
Usually, canned bread is used has an emergency food ration in case of disasters. Since it’s canned food, you can keep it for years and it’s often sold in supermarkets with other emergency food.
But why is there a canned bread vending machine on the platform of Hiratsuka station in Kanagawa prefecture? It’s still a mystery…
If you are curious about it, just stop by Hiratsuka station to check, and why not taste the bread!
