If you’re craving for grilled fish, Japan has plenty of delicious specialities to offer you.
Some of the most famous grilled fishes are mackerel, salmon or “sanma” in autumn, but “hokke” is also very popular.
The English name of “hokke” is “Okhotsk atka mackerel”, and as the name notes, it’s a mackerel from Okhotsk sea between Hokkaido in northern Japan and Russia.
“Hokke” is usually served either grilled or boiled, and it tastes quite salty.
Here is the most common preparation, the grilled “hokke” like in this lunch menu.
The fish is cut in the middle, laid flat, and grilled.
Since it’s a fish from cold water, the flesh contains delicious and healthy fat, full of Omega-3.
“Hokke” is quite salty so it comes with grated white daikon radish to balance the taste in your mouth.
The menu also contains rice, pickles, and a bowl of miso soup.
You can enjoy this delicious fish even in Tokyo.
