“Oiran” is a title given to the highest level of geisha. They are entertainers, models, and trendsetters of the Edo period. In other words, they were the Hollywood celebrities of their time. Naturally, their clothings were more colorful and had more gorgeous accessories.

In recent years, the oiran culture has been hugely popular due to manga and films depicting their lives, with a modern interpretation.

This modern interpretation has been heavily influenced by the Japanese photographer, Mika Ninagawa, who is known for her use of vibrant colors. Some have described this interpretation of oiran style as “neo-Japonesque”. If you’re looking for a truly special experience, make sure to go with this one.
