American Village is a popular tourist attraction on the sub-tropical island of Okinawa, Japan’s southernmost prefecture. There’s lots to love about American Village; over 60 shops, 56 eateries, a beach, and hotels are just some of its many attractions. With so much to do and see here, what really stands out? Allow me to share my top picks.
Sunset Beach.
Okinawa is famous for its abundance of beaches. Sunset Beach nestles at the rear part of American Village, and lives up beautifully to its name. Play games, lounge about, take a dip, or grab yourself a margarita and soak up a Japanese sunset.
Bollywood Dreams.
It’s no secret Japan loves a good curry, and no one does it better than India! Partake in a flavourful Indian dish at Bollywood Dreams. In the heart of Depot Island and with a glitzy Bollywood atmosphere, you can lose yourself in a world of taste and culture. Book on the weekend to avoid disappointment, or beat the crowds and sample one of their excellent lunch time sets midweek.
Dragon Palace
Embrace your competitive (and childish!) side in the Dragon Palace arcade. Chock full of chirpy arcade games and addictive claw machines, you aren’t short of entertainment here. There’s also shops and eateries, meaning you could spend a good day in here alone, a great rainy day option.
Jetta Burger Market.
Casual-cool cantina Jetta Burger Market has you covered if you’re hankering for Mexican or American food. Generous portions, good value sets, fresh ingredients, and some of the best smoothies on island make this one of the best eateries not only in American Village, but on Okinawa! A bold claim? Try it out and see if I’m wrong!
Ferris Wheel.
American Village is home to Okinawa’s only ferris wheel. Towering over the complex, it’s hard to miss its cheery red and yellow colours, and is even easier to spot at night: it’s all lit up. Rides are available daily (depending on weather conditions), and is particularly worth your time at night. A spectacular view is yours to treasure at the top, and the leisurely pace of the wheel allows plenty of time for appreciation.
