Where can you see lavender in Japan?

You can see it all over Japan. Many people may associate lavender with Hokkaido, but it is grown in farms and parks in a wide range of areas from Tohoku to Kyushu. Depending on the region, the flowering time may vary slightly, and it may be a spot that looks great on SNS, greatly changing the impression.

1. Hokkaido | Furano Farm Tomita

Farm Tomita, a representative scenic spot of lavender fields in Furano, Hokkaido. Within its vast premises, there are 13 flower fields, a lavender oil distillery, and several cafes and shops. The colorful carpet woven by lavender and other flowers is sure to impress.

The number one recommended spot is the "Field of Colors". Starting with purple lavender, white baby's breath, red poppies, pink dianthus, and various other flowers create a rainbow-like breathtaking view. The contrast with the blue sky is also superb.

Lavender begins to bloom in late June and reaches its peak in mid to late July. As of mid-April 2024, the official website is featuring the thriving lavender in the greenhouse of Farm Tomita, so it seems likely to reach its peak as usual. 2. Akita Prefecture｜Misato Town Lavender Garden

The Misato Town Lavender Garden, located in the lush natural beauty of the Odaiba Park in Misato Town, spans a vast 2 hectares. Approximately 20,000 lavender plants bloom here, from early to late blooming varieties. Among them, the original variety of white lavender, Misato Yukihana, is a must-see.

During the annual Lavender Festival held from mid to late June, lavender goods are sold and lavender picking experiences are also available (depending on the blooming conditions).

The nearest station is JR Omagari Station, where the Shinkansen also stops. The opening period for 2024 has been decided as June 8th (Saturday) to June 30th (Sunday).

3. Gunma Prefecture | Tambara Lavender Park

Located at an altitude of about 1,350m, the Tambala Lavender Park spreads across the highlands. Even in summer, you can enjoy about 50,000 lavender plants for a long period in a relatively cool climate. The large observatory at the top, overlooking the lavender fields, is an excellent photo spot.

Various varieties such as Koimurasaki and Okamurasaki are planted, and it might be interesting to compare them. It's a spot full of events and facilities where you can enjoy flower picking, gourmet food, shopping, and more all day long.

4. Saitama Prefecture | Sennen no Sono Lavender Garden

When you think of Saitama Prefecture, places like Kawagoe and Hanno may come to mind, but did you know it's home to one of the largest lavender fields in the Kanto region? The "Sennen no Sono Lavender Field" in Arashiyama Town spans approximately 6.5 hectares, about 1.4 times the size of Tokyo Dome, and boasts around 22,000 lavender plants that bloom beautifully. You can enjoy a breathtaking view. During the open season, various events such as lavender picking and handicraft experiences are held as part of the Lavender Festival.

The nearest station to the Sennen no Sono Lavender Field is Musashi-Arashiyama Station on the Tobu Tojo Line. It's about an hour from the city center, making it a great addition to a Tokyo sightseeing trip.

5. Yamanashi Prefecture | Oishi Park

Located along the shore of Lake Kawaguchi, Oishi Park is a spot with an excellent view of Mount Fuji. Surrounded by rich nature, you can enjoy flowers of each season. More than 90 types of seasonal flowers bloom along the lakeside for about 350m, and a carpet of purple flowers appears during the lavender season.
