The Takayama Festival is said to have originated from the late 16th to 17th century, and is also known as one of the Three Great Japanese Festivals. One of the highlights is the luxuriously decorated stands. The festival takes place on April on 14th and 15th, and October 9th and 10th every year, but even on days other than the festival, you can actually see the authentic festival stands displayed at the “Takayama Yatai Kaikan”.

Takayama Matsuri Yatai Kaikan
The biggest highlight of Takayama Yatai Kaikan are the real stands used at the Takayama Festival. Takayama Festival is designated as an important intangible folk cultural property, and the stalls are designated as an important tangible cultural property.
Takayama Festival is held twice: in spring and in autumn. Actually, the stalls used are different for each season. At Takayama Yatai Kaikan, 4 of the 11 festival stands used for the autumn Takayama Festival are on display. The stands are replaced in March, July, and November, so even those who have visited once can see different stands later.

At Takayama Yatai Kaikan, a Miko will explain the exhibits for you. If you want to hear the explanations, it is recommended to visit.

Fee for Takayama Yatai Kaikan
The fee for Takayama Yatai Kaikan is 900 yen for adults, 550 yen for high school students, and 450 yen for elementary and junior high school students. As it is a set with Sakurayama Nikkokan, after going through Takayama Yatai Kaikan, be sure to visit Sakurayama Nikkokan as well.
At the Sakurayama Nikkokan, a model of Nikko Toshogu is reproduced on a 1/10 scale. It is a must-see model that faithfully reproduces the whole thing, including decorations, sculptures and the paintings, using a total of more than 500,000 models.
Accessibility to Takayama Yatai Kaikan
Takayama Yatai Kaikan is a 20-minute walk from JR Takayama Station. There is also the Hida Takayama Lion Dance Ceremony Exhibition Hall nearby.
It's around a 10-minute walk from Sanmachi Suji, where an old townscape remains, and from where a morning market is held. After visiting Takayama Yatai Kaikan, sightseeing Takayama city is recommended.
