All About the Kyoto International Manga Museum
Established in a wonderful collaboration of Kyoto city and the Kyoto Seika University in November of 2006, the Kyoto International Manga Museum is a place where manga lovers, kids, and adults can enjoy a pleasant afternoon learning more about the history of manga in Japan.
It is located very close to Karasuma Oike station in building that used to be known as the Tatsuike Elementary School to preserve the historic qualities that the old school played in the region.
There are over 300,000 items that are displayed in the museum itself that include wood block prints from the Edo period, to magazines from the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods that document the history and evolution of manga to modern day.
Many of the items at the Kyoto International Manga Museum are presented via their exhibitions, seminars, and workshops that are held often. Visitors are actually encouraged to participate in some of the workshops, making it a unique experience every time you visit!
Visiting with Kids
Visiting Kyoto Manga Museum with kids is a great opportunity to refresh their senses after a day’s worth of visiting the local temples and shrines. Workshops and seminars, such as the MM Kamishibai offer a traditional Japanese style of story-telling with images, making it easy to follow along, even if you don’t fully understand Japanese.
There is also a children’s library, where younger kids can enjoy from a selection of 3,000 picture books to have fun. Though the museum does not offer rental strollers, there is a baby changing table on the 1st floor restroom and a room available for nursing mothers.
Hours and Admission Rates
Kyoto International Manga Museum hours go from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm with last admission being at 5:30 pm. They are closed every Wednesday, on Thursday if Wednesday is a national holiday, New Year’s holidays, and during maintenance.
Hour and closing times may change without notice though, so make sure to call or visit their official website for the most current open dates and times.
Admission fees start at 800 yen for adults, 300 yen for Junior High and High School students, and 100 yen for Elementary School students. There are group rates as well, but you will need a group of 20 or more people to qualify.

Only a couple blocks away from the Kyoto International Manga Museum is one of the oldest soba noodle shops in Kyoto, the Honke Owariya. First opened in 1465 as a confectionery shop, they began serving soba noodles since the mid-Edo period.
