When looking at Japanese fast food items, one of the most well known is the rice ball or "onigiri" in Japanese. You can make these easily at home, or buy them from your local convenience store. It's a food item that is regularly put into things such as children's lunch boxes.
In this article we are going to be introducing some onigiri that have taken the form of a watermelon! Why do Japanese people make the onigiri in the image of a watermelon...? Put that question aside for a time and let's make some delicious rice balls!
Ingredients
- White Rice 300g
- Kim-chi 30g (As long as you can stain the white rice red, anything is fine. We recommend something that isn't too watery)
- Salmon Flakes 30g(As long as you can stain the white rice red, anything is fine. We recommend something that isn't too watery)
- Scrambled Eggs 30g(As long as you can stain the white rice yellow, anything is fine. We recommend something that isn't too watery)
- Green dried seaweed powder As needed
- Baked seaweed As needed
Recipe
- Split the white rice into 6 equal parts.
- Ensure that when you are mixing the ingredients into the various portions of white rice, that the color from the Kim-chi, salmon flakes, and scrambled eggs is even.
- Mix the Kim-chi, salmon flakes, and scrambled eggs into the different portions of egg evenly.
- After mixing, start shaping each portion into a ball-shape.
- Place the colored rice in the center and wrap in white rice, ensure the shape of a ball is kept.
- Place the green dried seaweed powder across the entire ball, ensuring no spots are left uncovered.
- Cut the baked seaweed into thin trips, and create something that looks similar to the skin of a watermelon on the ball.
- Be careful when cutting the ball that it doesn't fall apart, then serve!
