The Akita Museum of Art was opened in 1967 and has a history of over 50 years. This new art museum with a triangular motif that was relocated in 2013 was designed with the concept of “a fascinating museum only available here”.

Also, the museum building has a different expression depending on the season. From the museum lounge, you can fully enjoy the beautiful scenery of Senshu Park over the water garden.

Other attractive buildings such as spiral staircases without pillars and wall supports, and a large triangular colonnade entrance hall that connects the museum with the city are also of interest.

Works Centered on Western and Landscape Paintings

In the gallery on the 2nd floor of the Akita Museum of Art, paintings by Tsuguharu Foujita are mainly exhibited.

Tsuguharu Foujita is a Japanese-born painter who went to France at the age of 26 and deepened exchanges with Pavlo Picasso and Amedeo Modigliani in Paris to produce Japanese oil paintings.

Of particular note is the Akita event. The Akita event is a large mural depicting Akita in 1937. It is a wonderful work that allows you to experience the precious experience of “seeing Akita nearly 100 years ago” while feeling the power of a large mural.

The beauty of the Akita Museum of Art is not only its works of art, but also the design of the building itself.

There is a large spiral staircase at the entrance of the museum. It is built along the wall with no support from the columns and walls. The staircase with nothing extra is very stylish. Be sure to pay attention to the entrance along with the triangular ceiling and natural granite floor.

The water garden that can be seen from the lounge is a beautiful spot that must not be forgotten. The water garden seen from the huge glass window is very beautiful, reflecting the blue sky and clouds. You can appreciate not only the beauty of the water surface but also the scenery of Akita that is visible in the distance.

Opening Hours and Entrance Fees

The Akita Museum of Art is open from 10:00 to 18:00. However, the opening hours may be extended during the Akita Kanto Festival in August.
