The Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Crafts Center is a facility that introduces Beppu Bamboo Crafts, the only traditional crafts designated by the country in Oita Prefecture. Located in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture. Within the building, you can appreciate the history and technique explanations of Beppu Bamboo Crafts and numerous works.
About Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Center
The Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Crafts Center is a cultural facility built to pass on the tradition of the Beppu Bamboo Crafts and spread information. Bamboo is used everywhere, including bamboo interiors and flooring.
In the exhibition room, a wide range of bamboo works are displayed by theme, and a special exhibition is held several times a year to appreciate beautiful bamboo works. There is also a “second training room” where you can experience making bamboo crafts and a “museum shop & cafe” that sells various bamboo crafts.

The Beautiful Bamboo Interior
In the building, you will be amazed by the impressive bamboo interior and objects. Among them, the 2-meter high bamboo arch leading to the exhibition room is very beautiful. 108 pieces of bamboo that have been cut and processed are used to create delicate details. If you walk while looking up at the top of the arch, the arch appears to move because of visual effects, so be sure to check it out!
The Demonstration of History and Works of Beppu Bamboo Crafts in Exhibition Room
In the exhibition room, about 150 bamboo crafts are exhibited, and is full of highlights. Exhibits range from daily necessities such as bento boxes (Japanese lunch box) and flat dishes to innovative interior goods and artistic works by bamboo craftsmen.
In addition, precious exhibits such as incandescent bulbs that use bamboo to generate electricity invented by Edison, and tools used to make bamboo crafts are also interesting.
Also, check out the “Video Room” where you can see the production process of bamboo crafts through video, and the “Okago” where Japanese traditional vehicles are made of bamboo.
Museum Shop with Charming Bamboo Crafts
The museum shop has around 100 kinds of bamboo crafts, including daily items such as chopsticks and spoons, accessories such as earrings, necklaces, and flower baskets. There are many things that can be used on a daily basis, so they make perfect souvenirs.
There is also a cafe space in the museum shop. Spend a leisurely time looking out at the bamboo grove outside the window.
Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Crafts Center Opening Hours and Ticket Fees
The Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Crafts Center is open from 8:30 to 17:00. It is closed on Mondays, and if Monday is a public holiday, it is closed the following day. In addition, it will be closed from December 29th to January 3rd.
The admission fee is 310 yen per adult. (As of October 2019)
How to Get to Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Crafts Center
To access the Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Crafts Center, use the “Kamenoi Bus” from JR Beppu Station. There are several routes for the Kamenoi Bus at JR Beppu Station, but if you take the APU Line via Noguchibaru no. 5, the nearest bus stop is Hikarinoen-mae, taking about 8 minutes. After getting off, you will reach the Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Crafts Center in about 10 minutes on foot.
