The Jogasaki Coast in Ito City, Shizuoka
The Jogasaki Coast in the southern part of Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture, is a jagged coast with a total length of about 9km. Mt. Omuro, a symbolic landmark of Ito city, erupted about 4000 years ago and lava flowed into the sea. The cliffs formed by the lava were then eroded into the cliffs we see today, several tens of meters high. The coastline is lined with these cliffs and you can see where the cliffs fold in on themselves in an intricate pattern.

The area around the Jogasaki Coast is full of various attractions such as suspension bridges, capes, lighthouses, and hiking courses that can be enjoyed throughout the seasons.
Superb View of the Jogasaki Coast from the Kadowaki Lighthouse
The Kadowaki Lighthouse is a lighthouse with a height of 24.9m above ground. There is a first observatory (indoors) with a capacity of 30 people at 17 meters above ground, and a second observatory with a capacity of 60 people at 4 meters above ground. On a clear day, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Izu Shichito islands and the Amagi Mountains. Entrance is free, so we recommend giving it a visit.

The Jogasaki Coast's Hiking Courses
The Jogasaki Coast is dotted with about 80 capes and 20 reefs. On the plateau, where the virgin forest stands, there is Japan's biggest bayberry shrub colony, and you can see creatures such as hares and rock swallows. Paths that take advantage of the natural landscape, such as hiking trails and nature research paths, have been created, and you can see seasonal plants as you walk along them. In June, the hydrangea that grows naturally along the Jogasaki coastline colors the promenade, and in July you can enjoy beautiful summer flowers such as lilies.
Access to the Jogasaki Coast from Tokyo by JR
To access the Jogasaki Coast from Tokyo, take the Shinkansen from Tokyo Station (about 75 minutes) and gets off at Atami Station. Transfer to JR (approx. 65 minutes) and get off at “Jogasaki Kaigan Station”, from there, it's approximately 25 minutes on foot.
