Nikko's “Kanmangafuchi Abyss” is a scenic spot where you can see unusual topography and the rapids of the Daiyagawa river. Kanmangafuchi Abyss
Kanmangafuchi Abyss is a small valley created by the lava flow of Mt. Nantaisan’s eruption. The lava-solidified riverbed creates deep undulations in the deep pools and river flow, allowing you to see a rough yet beautiful scenery. A stone statue built by a monk was once placed on a huge rock on the riverbank. It is said that the name of Kanmangafuchi was given the name "Kanman" from that stone statue. In addition, there is a legend that the word "Kanman" is engraved on the cliff upstream, and the founder of Shingon sect Buddhism, Kobo Taishi threw a brush at it and wrote it.

Kanmangafuchi Abyss Riverside Trail
The Jizogun (grouop of Jizo statues) can be found along the south bank of Kanmangafuchi. It is called "Bakejizo", as it is said the number is different every time you count them. There used to be 100 Jizo statues, but some are washed away by floods, so currently there are only about 70 of them left. The moss-covered Jizo is a mysterious sight. There is also a limited-time event where the Jizo statues are lit up. There is also an observation platform up some stairs, that protrudes out into the river. From the observation deck, you can watch the powerful river from up close.
Access to Kanmangafuchi Abyss
To get to Kanmangafuchi Abyss from Tokyo, take the Shinkansen from Tokyo Station and get off at Utsunomiya Station. From Utsunomiya Station, transfer to JR Nikko Line and get off at Nikko Station. Take a bus from JR Nikko Station or Tobu Nikko Station and get off at Nikko Sogo Kaikan Mae stop and walk about 20 minutes.
