Delve into modern nihonga at Narukawa Art Museum

Narukawa Art Museum was opened in 1988 on the shore of Lake Ashinoko in Hakone. It is built on top of a lush hill with a location overlooking Lake Ashinoko. From there you can also see the wonderful Mt. Fuji. The museum has a collection of 4000 contemporary nihonga that are masterpieces of a contemporary nihonga overview. It shows about 150 Yamamoto Kyujin parts and 40 Hirayama Ikuo parts. Moreover, in the future, the museum also presents works of promising artists.  It has exhibits related to the future of modern nihonga. You can enjoy the beautiful view of Lake Ashinoko with artworks in the museum. The opening hours of Narukawa Art Museum are 9:00~19:00(open all year round). Admission fee is 1300 yen for adults, 900 yen for university/high school students and 600 yen for middle/elementary school students.

Highlights of Narukawa Art Museum

The museum focuses on gathering masterpieces in an effort to transmit the splendor of nihonga after World War II to the wider public. Artist Kyujin Yamamoto is at the forefront of contemporary nihonga, his works being the key collection of the museum.

Not only pieces from renowned artists are gathered and displayed, but also pieces from promising artists, which is one of the characteristics of the museum. You can also have a panoramic view of Lake Ashinoko and from the inside of the big glass-clad museum you can see Mt. Fuji and Mount Hakone.

Snacks and cake sets are available in the cafes of the museum. You can look at Lake Ashinoko's beautiful view while you enjoy tea time. At the museum store, you can purchase products that are ideal souvenirs such as framed art prints and initial goods.

Access to Narukawa Art Museum

If you go from Tokyo Haneda Airport, take the Keikyu Line to arrive at Shinagawa Station. Then, take Shinkansen or JR Line to reach Odawara Station. Take the Hakone Tozan Train at Odawara Station and get off at "Hakone-Yumoto Station". After that, take the Hakone Tozan Bus and get off at "Motohakone-ko", followed by a 3-mintue walk.
