If you visit the old district of Fukagawa in Koto ward in Tokyo, don’t miss the local speciality “Fukagawa meshi”, aka Fukagawa rice.
“Fukagawa meshi” is a dish of steamed rice topped with asari (Japanese clams) and green onions cooked in miso stew.
You can enjoy it in many local restaurants in Fukagawa streets.
Originally, Fukagawa meshi was a dish ate at lunch by fishers in Edo-era.
Sumida river which is next to Fukagawa was full of clams, a very cheap food used by fishers as a basic ingredient.
The restaurant Ichibanboshi is serving the traditional Fukagawa meshi (with miso only) on Saturdays and Sundays only, but also a new variant: milk and miso Fukagawa meshi.
The milk gives a delicious creamy taste to miso and clam stew, creating a clam chowder-like flavor.
Here is the menu: a huge bowl of Fukagawa meshi, pickles, and a small plate of seasonal vegetables (fried eggplant with bonito flakes that day).
The Fukagawa meshi is very hot so be careful when you eat it!
Since clams became an expensive food in Japan, the menu is around 1080 yen.
Ichiban boshi also has plenty of cheap lunch menu with meat or fish around 600-800 yen.
Ichiban boshi has been featured in many magazines and TV shows for its Fukagawa meshi.
